Active Praise
The Active Praise coaching plan is a structured approach to engaging students in physical activities while promoting positive behavior. Follow these steps to implement the plan effectively:
PLAY
Objective: Get the game going quickly and safely.
Action: Gather the students together and start the game within 30 seconds.
Details: Explain the simple rules & safety points to ensure everyone understands how to play safely.
REINFORCE
Objective: Reinforce safety and rules.
Action: Pause the game and gather the students.
Details: Go over the safety points again and reiterate the game rules. Provide any additional information needed to ensure clarity.
AFFIRMATIONS
Objective: Encourage and reward good behavior.
Action: Gather the students and praise them.
Details: Highlight the importance of playing safely and following rules. Reward students demonstrating good behavior with stickers or by assigning them roles within the games. For example, make them the aliens in the Alien Splat game or the Pokémon Trainer in the Pokémon game.
INTRODUCE NEW CONDITIONS
Objective: Keep the game dynamic and challenging.
Action: Gather the students and praise them for their adherence to rules.
Details: Introduce new rules and conditions to the game to keep it interesting and challenging.
STUDENT INPUT
Objective: Involve students in the game design.
Action: Gather the students and ask for their feedback.
Details: Encourage students to provide input on modifying or improving the game, ensuring they feel valued and engaged. For example, students might decide that a hula hoop can be used as a safe zone where no one can tag them when they stand inside it.
EVALUATION
Objective: Assess and improve the game.
Action: Gather the students to evaluate the game.
Details: Consider questions such as:
Does the game need to be more challenging or easier?
Are the kids fully engaged?
Do I need to adjust the play area size?
Should I introduce another condition or rule?
Can I add additional equipment to enhance the fun?
Following this structured approach, you can create a safe, engaging, and dynamic environment for students, promoting physical activity and positive behavior.
Social Emotional Learning & Conflict Resolution
This method will naturally foster Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). You can integrate our conflict resolution techniques, such as Rock, Paper, Scissors, into the games to support and encourage positive behavior.
