Crossing The River
Game Explained
Space:
A field you use for a game will broadly be applicable.
Task:
Students start at the end of the marked area and must try and make it to the other end without being struck below the knee or on their ball. One or two students act as the river monsters on the area's perimeter. Their job is to try and strike those dribbling to the end. If they do, they join them as river monsters. Play until everyone is struck.
Equipment:
Everybody has a ball they keep with them through the task. Cones mark the designated area where the game is played.
Dots as safety zones (3-5 sec, one student per dot.)
People:
Identify 2/3 who are the river monsters
*Emphasis for safety on striking the ball below the knee – by staying over the ball
Outcomes –Travel with the ball. Accelerating, turning, and looking as you travel
Variations/ Progressions
Space: To increase the difficulty, make the area narrower.
Task: River monsters can position inside the river rather than on the edges. River monsters must strike the ball only (encourages students to dribble in a way that hides their ball)
Equipment: Dodgeball to be thrown to ‘strike’ rather than a soccer ball kicked. Dots as safety zones in the river that students to get to on the way to the end.
People: Increase or decrease the number of river monsters (link to space –i.e., more monsters = more difficulty).
